Does it work?

Does the system outlined in "Racing Horses" Work?

  • Bill O'Gorman's total 2y.o. intake (Taken from "Horses in Training") for the period 1977 /1990 was 333 horses
  • His Number of 2y.o. runners for this period was 234 (70% of total intake)
  • His number of 2y.o. winners for this period was 116 (35% of total intake, 50% of juvenile runners)
  • Over 40 of the 234 were Stakes Horses (SW, SPl, Timeform 100 or unbeaten)
  • The number of 2y.o. races he won during this period was 259 (110% races won to runners)
  • There were 12,740 2y.o. races in this period and 35,957 2y.o. runners
  • i.e. the ratio of 2y.o. races available to individual runners was about 35%

Take out Provideo and Timeless Times as anomalies – still 232 runners, 114 winners, 1117 starts for 227 wins (20.3%) and 315 2nd and 3rd. (ITM48%). "2y.o. races won to runners" ratio still almost exactly 100% over 14 years.

Allen and Wilsher published a survey of 537 2y.o.s selected at random, which gave 327 2y.o. runners (61%) for 93 2y.o. winners (17.4% of total, 28.4% of runners,) of 124 2y.o. races (38% Races won to runners, which was close to random expectation)

Given the length of the experiment, it appears that the "Racing Horses" system works as far as training juveniles is concerned.

Did this system compromise their chance of success as three year olds?

As a matter of interest the majority of these horses did buck their shins, but we were careful enough that they did not run or work when sore and they never had any ongoing problem.

Timeform ratings are included to demonstrate that many of them maintained a similar or higher level of performance at three although the programme book provided them with far few realistic opportunities for success due to penalising their juvenile achievements.
